Product Information

The Kompaktor ARC HK is just one of a range of roller presses manufactured by the Hosokawa Micron Group, with specialist versions available for the pharmaceutical, chemical, mineral, metal and food industries.

Hosokawa’s energy efficient Kompaktor ARC HK roller press range has a unique and very specific function; to compact charcoal powder into charcoal briquettes, which can be used for barbecue cooking and as fuel. The range comprises two, gravity-fed, models – ARC HK 150 and ARC HK 200 – which, between them, offer throughputs of 1 or 2.5 tonnes per hour, based on a briquette size of 5cm2. Hosokawa Micron is a specialist designer, engineer and manufacturer of processing equipment and complex process systems for a wide range of manufacturing industries, including minerals, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and metals. We boast considerable expertise in powder processing science, innovation and technology, garnered over more than a century, and are renowned around the world for our robust, high-performance milling equipment, which consistently processes powder material of the very highest quality exactly to customer specification.

There are currently two Kompaktor ARC HK models available in the range (the ARC HK 150 and ARC HK 200), offering a working width of 150mm or 200mm. The smaller version is powered by a 5.5kW motor, while the larger version has a 7.5kW motor. The roller diameter for both machines is 400mm.

Roller width (mm) 64 – 80
Throughput in kg/h 200 – 500

The Kompaktor ARC HK has been specifically engineered to manufacture charcoal briquettes, but we have a number of other roller mills in our portfolio suitable for compacting powders, including pilot-scale equipment for APIs, R&D and laboratory use.

Typically, our Kompaktors are used by the mineral, metal, chemical, pharmaceutical and food industries to produce granulate or briquettes and can be used in collaboration with a Hosokawa Alpine Flake Crusher and other processing equipment. The ARC CS 25 is perfect for processing small amounts of powder, particularly abrasive material and where frequent product changes are necessary.

The Kompaktor ARC HK roller press has been specifically designed to compress charcoal powder into uniform briquettes that can be used for grilling food on a barbecue. Charcoal briquettes are also becoming increasingly popular as a fuel for powering manufacturing processes such as steel making.

Henry Ford, inventor of the Model T car – helped by University of Oregon chemist, Orin Stafford – invented charcoal briquettes in 1920. Ford used a lot of hardwood to manufacture the cars, which created a lot of waste sawdust, stumps and branches. As an early environmentalist and savvy businessman, he wanted to recycle the waste. Ford loved camping and decided to invent something to make more efficient campfires. He and Stafford took wood scraps, tar and cornstarch and pressed them together into pillow-shaped forms to make the first charcoal briquettes. Today, one million tonnes of waste wood are made into charcoal briquettes every year.

The gravity fed Kompaktor ARC HK from Hosokawa is an efficient roller press, capable of effortlessly compacting charcoal powder into standardised, dust-free, briquettes.

The machine is screw-fed with charcoal powder, which slowly makes its way down between two synchronised, counter rotating rollers with briquette-size indentations to create a very controlled process. Various factors, including the extremely high pressure and slow speed of the rollers against the powder, mean that the crushing powder uniformly densifies and compacts into the briquette mould to form briquette-shaped single particles, which retain their shape as they drop out of the press. Typically, further processing separates the briquettes from any remaining dust or undersized material, which can then be reprocessed.

Mechanical spring assemblies offer elasticity to the swing arm, meaning that the equipment is efficient and economical to run.

Hosokawa’s Kompaktor ARC HK can be purchased as standalone equipment, but we do have the expertise, capability and product ranges to integrate the roller press into a complex process system, if required, including sieving and drum handling equipment.

Hosokawa Micron is a processing and containment equipment specialist for powders and particles, with broad-based, in-depth industry knowledge and a comprehensive portfolio of specialist equipment suitable for a multitude of processing sectors and applications.

Our highly experienced equipment and processing specialists would be pleased to design a bespoke process system for your unique application requirements.
