Starch

Hosokawa Micron brings a wealth of powder processing expertise to the highly specialised production of starch.

Starch is an important binding agent in the food industry, used in sauces, soups, sweets, liquorice, and ice cream, among many other things. It is used in glue and as a stiffening agent for paper and textiles in the chemical industry.

Industrial modification of raw starch results in improved solubility in (cold) water, modification into various sugars such as dextrose, fructose, or even base material for sweeteners. Transferral into glucose products, on the other hand, is one of the most important food applications.

The particle sizes of starch powders made from wheat, corn, potatoes, peas, rice, or manioc can be attributed to their technological properties. Because of the high production volumes and low margins in the food and animal feed industries, the results must be dependable, reproducible, and health-wise, impeccable. With native and modified starches, these are defined among other things in their gelling, texture and colour properties. Starch powders are highly explosive at ultra-small particle sizes.

The Hosokawa Micron group offers different technologies to process native and modified starch:

Grinding – deagglomeration of starch and grinding to a uniform product

The dried starch particles must be ground to a fine powder for a consistent application. The Fine Impact Mill UPZ with its changeable milling elements or a classifier mill is used depending on the raw material and customer requirements.

Ultra-fine milling – combination of milling and classification for a steep particle size distribution

High-precision classifier technology combined with an ultra-fine grinding mill is used to process starch powders with a precise top cut and a steep particle size distribution. Because of high rotational speeds and an integrated classifier wheel, the classifier mills Zirkoplex ZPS and Air Classifiying Mill ACM can achieve particle sizes of 30μm. Starch powder is a highly explosive material due to its fineness. Hosokawa Micron provides ATEX-compliant plants for your guaranteed production safety.

Process systems for Starch Modification

Hosokawa Micron has developed a continuous processing system that is ideal for starch modification: the Hosokawa continuous agglomeration system, which consists of a Flexomix mixer/agglomerator and a fluid bed dryer/cooler.
