The ATR consists of a water cooled
vertical cylinder, typically lined with aluminium tiles and top
driven wear protected motor. Incoming material at minus 200 micron
or finer, and grinding media are introduced at a controlled rate
from above and move through the machine by gravity. Size reduction
occurs due to the shear forces caused by the agitation of the
grinding media and material.
